I know, it is quite NOT OKAY! A couple of months ago were worshipping in front of church, and there was Brayden, in the front, with his fingers down his pants! He did it for quite some time, from about 18 mo til about a month ago. I thought I would never be able to break him of it (my mom had no advise b/c my brother never did that), but I always started asking, "Where's your fingers?" And I would put my hands up in the air and wiggle my fingers until he copied me. (A little game, he thought). Besides that, I don't know. I know every kid is different, so good luck on finding a solution that fits for Nate. Poop is gross --- fortunately Brayden never did that.
ewww I have some stories. Not about Isaiah the boy like on would think, but about the little girl I watch. I have had about 3 runins with 'playing with poop' and I almost lost it. I think they just get to a point where it becomes gross to them too and they grow out of it. She would probably never dream of doing it now, but she did it those 3 times here (more elsewhere I heard) between the ages of 1 and 2 1/2. Good luck! I just had to stress to her again and again the great things about going in the toilet and catch here asap to change her! still grosses me out to think about it.
